Family was important to Ruth Finke
I went to the funeral of Ruth Finke on Monday. She was one of my surrogate “moms” through high school and beyond. Ruth was 96 when she passed last week. I am certain she had no regrets, or at least very few. She wound up with four great kids, lots of beautiful grandchildren and even better, lots of great grandchildren. I know through my action with her family members that family was of utmost importance in her life. She was plain spoken and gave it to you straight, whether you liked what she had to say or not. The Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce’s 21st Annual Jerry Lippus Memorial Classic Car Show is this Saturday, August 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown. For more information, contact the Chamber office at 419-734-5503 or go to their website at portclintonchamber.com.

The Annual Inter-Lake Yachting Association’s big regatta begins this week, starting with the Deep Water Race from Port Clinton Thursday morning. The actual regatta starts Friday morning August 1 and runs through Sunday, August 3. A special feature of this year’s event will be the Corsair class multi-hulls will be holding their National Championships as part of the Big Regatta. There will be well over 100 sailboats involved, and it really makes for some nice photo opportunities. 

The local volunteers for the American Cancer Society are holding their Celebration of Life Pub Crawl next Saturday, August 9 from 8-11 p.m. They will finish at Mango Mama’s for music and a $1,500 Reverse Raffle! 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society. 

Friday are the free iPad classes at Otterbein North Shore. The beginners’ class starts at 10 a.m. while the intermediate class starts at 11 a.m. For more information, contact them at 419-798-8250.

Pastor Bruce Bachelor-Glader at Trinity United Methodist Church in Port Clinton has begun a very interesting program, and it is NOT an extra Church Service! They have hooked up with a program titled “Lifetree” which features the playing of a DVD on an interesting topic of public importance. This Sunday, the program is titled “Overcoming Childhood Pain”. It is at 6 p.m. at the Church located at 135 Adams Street in Port Clinton. Other programs coming up in August include: “Why do they Hate Us…Understanding Radical Islam” (August 10); along with three more scheduled for following three Sundays of August. 

The Friends of Ida Rupp Public Library will hold their annual used book sale this weekend from July 31 to August 2 at the Library located at 310 S. Madison Street in Port Clinton. The pre-sale for Friends of the Library members will take place from 5-7 p.m. on July 31. Memberships will be available at the door or in advance at the library circulation desk. The sale to the general public will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 1 and 9:30 a.m. to Noon on August 2.

The 9th Annual Terry Heise Scholarship Golf Classic will be held again this year at Oak Harbor Golf Course on Saturday, September 20. Terry was a local business owner (Port Clinton Glass, still run by his family) who was also very active in the community and served many years as a football and baseball coach. The Kiwanis Club of Port Clinton is holding their 3rd Annual Evening at the Races on Friday, November 14, at Lock, Dock & Barrel on Buckeye Blvd. in Port Clinton. Mark your calendars and buy your tickets for this really fun event. The $25 ticket gets you lots of appetizers and a chance to bet on a winner! One of these days, I know my horse, Mean Mary Alice is going to make it home a winner!!!

Don’t forget our Coffee with the Editor session at Common Grounds every Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. Lots of interesting local topics are discussed. We have arranged to turn the meeting into a “Town Hall” session the last Wednesday of the month featuring Port Clinton Mayor Vince Leone. He is anxious to “correct the record” responding to the rumors on the proposed improvement projects downtown and in Waterworks Park. Also don’t forget that Common Grounds offers their gourmet coffee for just 99-cents with one refill or you can also get 10% off your order on Wednesday mornings.  

The Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce is coordinating the 5th Semi-Annual Village Wide Garage Sale Days scheduled for August 22 & 23. The women of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Clinton are currently planning their annual Fall Festival for Saturday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. An invitation has been extended to artists, crafters and businesses to participate.
