Finding Wiley in Las Vegas, Nevada

I found Wiley!!! No, not Wylie Walleye, Larry Wiley, the star running back of the undefeated Port Clinton football team of 1962. I had a Publishers Business Summit in Las Vegas last Saturday. I couldn’t get a flight out until late Sunday, so I made arrangements to spend some time with Larry Wiley who lives in Vegas with his lovely wife Catherine (Coleman) who graduated from PCHS in 1965. They hope to come “home” in July for the Class of 1963’s 50 year reunion and a special reunion of the ’62 football team in September. I learned all about the football teams of the early 1960’s. Larry picked me up at the hotel and took me to his home. Catherine, an avid LA Laker fan, also served me a steak dinner topped off by a delicious slice of Apple Pie. They couldn’t have been more hospitable. I can tell you, Larry still can’t get over the only blemish on the record of that team, a 6-6 tie with Perrysburg that cost them a perfect season and the outright Northern Lakes League championship.

On Saturday, Feb. 16, the community helped to raise money for United Way in Ottawa County by shopping at Bassett’s Market in an effort to meet Tom Bohlander’s challenge to match the $7,500 he donated in honor of his longtime friend and business partner, Ron Case. Bassett’s reported 259 transactions of $50 or more that day with Mike donating $5 for each, and that total was $1,295. Today is the deadline for Tom’s challenge, and according to M.J. Siewert, they are still a little shy of reaching the $15,000 challenge goal. You can drop off a donation at the United Way office located in the Sutton Center, or you can call in a pledge by phone at 419-734-6645.

Our Find Wylie winner for this week is Nancy Wolfe of Marblehead. She was one of 138 entries who found our friendly fish hiding in the ad for Community Markets on page 5A in last week’s Beacon. Nancy wins our weekly $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll be hiding Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop off an entry form at our office in the Beacon Place Business Center or click on the Find Wylie Icon at our website, www.thebeacon.net.

Good luck to the Oak Harbor High School wrestlers headed to Columbus this weekend for the State Championships. They will be led by returning state placer Luke Kramer. Luke’s Mom, Danelle, a former B-C-S School Bus Driver, now lives in Columbus and no doubt will be on hand. No doubt Luke wants to add his name to the distinguished list of Rocket wrestlers who have won state titles. Also, good luck to the Port Clinton High School girls’ basketball team who notched their unprecedented 20th win of the season last Saturday in a thrilling sectional championship win over their rivals from Oak Harbor.

The Salvation Army Port Clinton Service Unit serving Ottawa County is extending their Winter Coats Program, due to the increasing needs and the generosity of the community. The Salvation Army’s Warm Winter Coats program usually runs from Nov. 1-Jan. 31.  This year the program has been extended to run through February.  This program is based on donations from the general public of gently used and new coats to be cleaned and redistributed cost-free to local families in need of a winter coat. Executive Cleaners had provided cleaning for all donated coats. This is the 17th year this program has been providing coats to the residents of Ottawa County. Residents in need of a warm winter coat can come to The Sutton Center and pick up coats for their families. Last year, they collected and distributed over 1,100 coats to local families. This year over 1,200 coats have been distributed. If you are in need of a warm winter coat, stop by The Salvation Army in The Sutton Center or call Director Maureen Saponari at 419-732-2769.

More infrastructure work is being done in Port Clinton. Waterline replacement work on Maple Street started on Monday. Ed Burdue is the subcontractor for this work. Due to the age of the water-main infrastructure in the area, it is possible for sudden water loss due to depressurization of the water mains as crews connect existing lines to the new water mains being installed. The City may have to issue boil water advisories to the homes and businesses affected. They will be lifted as soon as testing results allow. Questions can be directed to City Hall at 419-734-5522.

There are a few ladies of our area I call “Mom”, and Lillian Hanes was one of them. That’s because she was Nadine and Anita’s mom (Nadine Hanes Jensen was a classmate and former staffer at The Beacon) and because she was such an incredibly sweet lady. She was a long and faithful member of Faith United Methodist Church in Port Clinton and used to head up the 4th Friday lunches at the Church. She made sure that they got a blurb in Telltales. She will be missed.

Our Find Wylie winner for this week is Richard McCloy of Oak Harbor. He was one of 32 entries who found that our friendly fish wasn’t hiding anywhere in last week’s Beacon. Richard wins our weekly $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll be hiding Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop off an entry form at our office in the Beacon Place Business Center or click on the Find Wylie Icon at our website, www.thebeacon.net

Congratulations to Luke Cramer, the 22nd Oak Harbor High School wrestler to win a state championship. Luke jumped from the 138 lb. weigh class to 170 lbs. this year, but just got stronger and stronger as the season wore on. He won both of his first round matches to qualify for the semi-finals. He defeated a wrestler from St. Paris Graham, perhaps Ohio’s most dominant wrestling program, in the semi-finals by a 6-1 count and then won his finals match 16-4. Oak Harbor finished 7th overall as a team in Division II. So congratulations to George Bergman and his staff at Oak Harbor on another fine season.

Also congratulations to Toby Bickel and his staff along with the players of the 2012-13 Port Clinton Lady Redskin basketball team. They fell to state ranked Toledo Rogers last Saturday, but had a heckuva season. They were the first PCHS girls’ basketball team to win over 20 games in a season. Unfortunately, they are in the same conference with another state ranked team, the Clyde Lady Fliers, who moved on to the Regionals. Welcome to March Madness!

Your prayers are requested for a couple of local folks who have made a big impact on our community. Former Port Clinton Mayor Tom Brown has had some serious heart issues recently, but is up and around. We spoke briefly on Monday evening and he told me his issues are probably not over. Also, Dave Audiano, a Past Commodore of Port Clinton Yacht Club, is a real fighter, according to Lock Zeis. He was moved to Hospice of Northwest Ohio last Friday, but is starting to respond to treatments.

Speaking of prayers, Devin Kohlman, the Port Clinton Middle School Student diagnosed with metatistatic medulloblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, underwent another surgery last Friday, his third. He has been through radiation therapy and chemotherapy and is started a second regime of chemotherapy. A benefit is being planned for Wednesday, March 27 from 6-9 p.m. at Rosie’s Bar and Grill located at the Old Island House at the corner of Second and Madison Streets in downtown Port Clinton. There will be entertainment by Corduroy Road, food and refreshments will be served. They are asking a donation of $20 per person with 100% of the proceeds going to Devin and his mother.

On a cheerier note, congratulations Ottawa County! You did it! Tom Bohlander $7,500 community challenge was met, and then some. United Way of Ottawa County raised over $9,500 to match Tom’s challenge when the campaign fell $15,000 short this year.

It’s Port Clinton Youth Baseball and Softball signup time. Registrations have been sent home via the schools. Congratulations to former Gallery on the Lake owners Gary and Marie Perkins who are celebrating their 29th year in business at their DaVinci’s Gallery and Coffee House in downtown Fremont. They began a custom framing business in the basement of their home in 1984 and created three separate galleries, introduced Northwest Ohio to dozens of nationally known artists and created a woodturning studio for classes and demonstrations. They had to downsize a couple of years ago due to health issues, closing their Port Clinton operation. So, if you can, drive down to Fremont next Thursday, Friday or Saturday, March 21-23, and say hi to Gary and Marie for me.

There is no longer a need to wait for your newspaper to arrive in your driveway. You can get local news updates and fresh photos every day, 24/7 on www.thebeacon.net. Check us out. We hope you will be pleasantly surprised.

Did you hear about popular local singer Ron Howard? Ronnie is the lead singer in the band Cruisin’ and does other performance gigs as well. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, his auto caught fire and he lost everything, I mean everything. He lost the car, which also had all of his sound equipment inside of it. Then he found out his wife forgot to update their insurance premium and voila!!! … no insurance! Well, the good folks at Cleats on the way to Marblehead are holding a benefit for Ronnie on Sunday, April 7 from 1-5 p.m. Tickets are $25 for a special buffet meal and are available at Cleats, Minuteman Press and at The Beacon. That afternoon you can hear Cruisin’, Colin Dussault, Smooth Groove and more. Definitely worth the price of admission.

We were saddened to learn of the deaths of a couple of very lovely ladies in our community this week. First, Helen Grummel passed away last week. She was a school teacher for life, and I got to know her quite well back in the 1970s when her son-in-law, Denny Kersten, coached the Oak Harbor Wrestling team, starting the dynasty that we know today. She and her husband bought Gem Beach Marina about that time, which is still owned and operated by the Grummel family, Helen’s son Jack and his wife Ginger. Megan (Jack and Ginger’s daughter) Lovett also works there with her husband Steve. Also, the infamous lady who was a fixture at local Happy Hours, Miss Pat, passed away over the weekend. She was just a wisp of a lady, but always had a hug for me. I know this much, she enjoyed her life right up to the end.

Our Find Wylie winner for this week is Mark Miesler of Port Clinton. He was one of 114 entries who found our friendly fish hiding in the ad for Baumann’s Auto Center on page 8B in last week’s Beacon. If you find him, drop off an entry form at our office in the Beacon Place Business Center or click on the Find Wylie Icon at our website,  www.thebeacon.net.

I received a lovely note last week from Mary Monak, a regular contributor for The Beacon, with her dedicated publicity for the Marblehead VFW Post. She said she thought of me during a prayer session recently. I could always use a few extra prayers out there. Anyway, she told me the story of her husband Dan who still holds State records for longest return of a pass interception against Port Clinton almost 60 years ago. The game was one-sided with PC holding a 41-0 lead and driving for a score when they arrived on the 8 yard line and attempted a pass into the end zone. Dan picked it off three yards deep and headed the other way, scoring the Stonecrushers’ only TD of the day. Dan’s 103 yard interception return still ranks in the top 10 in Ohio High School football history. The story made my day. I love it when I learn something I didn’t know before.

In the past few weeks, we have worked closely with our webmaster Paul Wallen, our editor Donna Lueke and our graphic design staff to make it a priority to keep our website current, not just once a week, but every day. Every day we are sent or informed about breaking news. Some of it is big news, some of it isn’t. However, it is all local news about local people, places and events. There is no longer a need to wait for your newspaper to arrive in your driveway. You can get local news updates and fresh photos every day, 24/7 on www.thebeacon.net. Check us out. We hope you will be pleasantly surprised.

As you all know, this is Easter Weekend, the most holy of holidays in the Christian world, celebrating the resurrection of a man named Jesus, who was put to death by crucifixion, and rose three days later to prove to the world that he was, in fact, the Son of God. It is also the feast of Passover celebrated in the Jewish world which goes all the way back to the days of Moses in Egypt before he led his people out of slavery. Let us all take the time to worship this weekend. It’s not just about the Easter bunny and Easter eggs. It’s about something more important than that.

The Tin Goose flies again!

I got to fly the Ford Tri-Motor last Friday. Not THE Ford Tri-Motor, but the flight simulator at the Liberty Air Museum. I got the plane up and down safely from Carl Keller field to the Put-in-Bay airport. However, we did a hop to Kelleys Island and my landing there wasn’t so smooth. As they say, any landing you walk away from is a good landing!!! The simulators, including one for the P-51 Mustang, will be at the Museum through this coming weekend. Check ‘em out!

Remembering the meaning of Memorial Day

It is Memorial Day Weekend, which means the Walleye Festival is in town. We are adding a Dining, Entertainment, Boating and Fishing section this week titled COASTLINES. The entire schedule for the Walleye Festival is included. Given good weather, the Memorial Day weekend also brings a lot of extra traffic, so please be careful, take your time and don’t text and drive. Most of all, Monday is Memorial Day, the day set aside to honor the fallen, those individuals who gave the full measure of devotion in defense of freedom. Please keep in your minds this weekend the true purpose and meaning of Memorial Day.

This quick reminder…because of the Memorial Day Holiday, our deadline for next week’s Beacon is this Friday, May 24.

One couldn’t help but be moved to see the incredible devastation caused by the EF4 Tornado that ripped a path through Moore, Oklahoma, on Monday. We learned on Tuesday that the home of Tim Ward, a Port Clinton High School graduate and his wife Anna, was caught in the tornado’s path and have lost just about everything. One of Tim’s classmates, Jason Palacios, lives nearby and can get donations to Tim and his family. Donations can be sent to Jason at PO Box 5181, Edmond, OK 73083.

It seems like only yesterday that a new business started up that changed the face of our area tremendously. The Jet Express began operations in June of 1988, offering fast catamaran ferry service to Put-in-Bay and late night service off the Island, something that wasn’t available before. I remember Mack McCann speaking at a Kiwanis meeting in 1989 that the result was a 40% increase in business on South Bass Island. The business has also been a tremendous asset to the mainland side of things, as they employ over 50 folks during the season. Congratulations to the founders, Mack, George Stoiber and the late Skip Duggan. The Jet Express is a true example of the philosophy, “A Rising Tide Raises All Boats”.

They are good folks and we apologize for the errors.

I received a phone call last week from Vietnam era veteran Ted Petersen of Port Clinton. He informed me that there was one more Port Clinton name that was not listed who is on the Moving Wall that is the Vietnam Memorial. His name is Lance Kohanke, who would have graduated from PC in 1965 but moved away a year before graduation when his family was forced to transfer following the closing of the Erie Army Depot. His sister Debbie was in my graduating class, but moved away after her freshman year also.

Tonight is the special Wine Tasting Kickoff Party for this weekend’s Catawba/Marblehead Parade of Homes. 4th of July is next Thursday, so we have some early deadlines at The Beacon for next week’s edition. We pretty much have to have all material by Friday at 4 p.m. Information for our Coastlines supplement needs to be to us today, Thursday, June 27.

You will have to excuse me if I sound a little tired! We just executed a spectacular Catawba/Marblehead Parade of Homes Tour on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, we had 25 teams participate in the Materion Chick Schaffner Memorial Charity Golf Classic…an all day event which we sponsor also. However, both events came off like clockwork and we had over 200 people tour just about every home on the Tour. Great Job to all involved!

For those of you on Facebook (which is probably just about everybody reading this) The Beacon is now posting updates there three times a day. Please “Like” us on Facebook when you see our updates, or “friend” us. We are also updating our website, www.thebeacon.net just about as often. Reading The Beacon online is like getting a daily “all local” newspaper. It is also an easy way for our “part time” residents to stay in touch with what is happening in our local area during the week, prior to coming up for the weekend. Stay connected…get the latest news at www.thebeacon.net.

Our “Find Wylie” winner this week is Jerry Rooney of Rocky River who was one of 132 individuals who found our friendly fish hiding in the ad for The Catawba/Marblehead Parade of Homes on page 8C in last week’s Beacon. Jerry wins our weekly $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll definitely be hiding Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop off an entry form at our office in the Beacon Place Business Center or click on the Find Wylie Icon at our website, www.thebeacon.net.

Our new intern, Jasmine Cupp, is giving a presentation on photography this evening (Thursday, June 27) at 7 p.m. at Ida Rupp Public Library. Jasmine’s presentation is part of the Greater Port Clinton Area Artists’ Art Walk.

The Erie Township Volunteer Fire Department is hosting their 45th Annual Chicken & Ribs Barbecue this Sunday, June 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fire Hall in LaCarne, between Port Clinton and Oak Harbor on State Route 163. A chicken dinner is just $8, while a Ribs dinner is $12. We believe that any time we can help out ANY of Ottawa County’s dedicated 1st Responders, we ought to do it!

Congratulations to a couple of new businesses opening up in Downtown Port Clinton. First, congratulations go out to Kelley Rigoni and her Hot Shots Photgraphic Studios on Madison Street. Welcome to the big 4th of July weekend! The Beacon is being published a day earlier than normal this week. By the time you read this, the Sesqui-Centennial Celebration of the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg will be over. It is amazing to realize just how many men were killed or wounded in the three days of carnage outside the small town of Gettysburg, PA. When Abraham Lincoln visited and dedicated the cemetery there, he delivered perhaps the greatest Presidential speech of all time. He started it by saying: “Four score and seven years ago, our forefathers brought forth a new nation…” That was in recognition of the 4th of July, 1776. Much blood has been spilled, but we are still a free people thanks to the courage of those great men in Philadelphia 237 years ago. So, enjoy the fireworks and the fun. Just please remember why we celebrate.

Time is running out to register to play in the 7th Annual Magruder Hospital Auxiliary Golf Classic on Monday, May 15. The fee is only $130 per player, which includes two drink tickets, lunch and dinner, cart and greens fees and lots of prizes. Registration and lunch begin at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. To register, call 419-734-3131, extension 3256. I promise you will have a good time!

Garage sales and golf and shooters defy the rain

I sure hope the Good Lord has turned off the spigot for a while! Over 7 inches of rain fell in June and at least 2-3 inches fell the first 10 days of July! We need some nice weather! The competitors at Camp Perry I am sure would appreciate it as well. I attended another impressive First Shot ceremony out there on Monday morning, always impressive and with the added presence of the B-25 owned by the Aviation Museum doing fly-bys. Camp Perry is a treasure. It was also great news to hear that those awful huts are going to be torn down and replaced with something much nicer. I was 16 when I worked for the summer there, and cleaned every one of those huts. Two cots on a concrete floor! $3-million ought to help that situation out a lot!

For you Garage Sale mavens, this weekend is for you, and Marblehead is the place to be. The Marblehead Merchants Group is sponsoring Yard Sales this Saturday, July 13. Many of the merchants there will be setting up a great shopping experience outside along Main Street. If you would like to get a space, call Connie at PC Antiques at 419-798-1400. If you get there early, stop in at the new Victory Café, Marblehead’s new coffee shop at 724 Main Street. Then head over to Johnson’s Island for their Annual All Island Garage Sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be household items, marine items, clothing, tools and more. About 40 family locations are participating. You really can’t go wrong!

Our “Find Wylie” winner this week is Lila Hohenfeld of Marblehead who was one of 188 individuals who found our friendly fish hiding in the ad for the Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport on page 5A in last week’s Beacon. Lila wins our weekly $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores as well as a new prize, a beautiful decorative nautical floor mat from “Capn’s Custom Carpets” at Fort Firelands. We’ll definitely be hiding Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop off an entry form at our office in the Beacon Place Business Center or click on the Find Wylie Icon at our website, www.thebeacon.net.

All proceeds help support the mission of the Port Clinton Salvation Army Service Unit. If you are interested or would like to make a donation, call Maureen Saponari at 419-732-2769. Their office is located at the Sutton Center on the east edge of Port Clinton.

As we have stated before, we have a lot of new businesses opening up this summer. I stopped in for a visit the other day to the Victory Café, 724 Main Street in Marblehead. Great coffee and pastries! They are getting ready to introduce a lot of really different Panini sandwich offerings. They are open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day with coffee, lattes, mochas, smoothies, sodas, tea, lemonade, juices, as well as bagels, muffins, cookies and croissants. Stop in and check ‘em out!

We received an e-mail from a long-time competitor at the National Rifle and Pistol Matches asking that we bring back some of the outstanding history articles written by Karin Messner many years ago. What do you think? Send me an e-mail and let us know. My e-mail address is john@thebeacon.net.

With two tall ships coming to Port Clinton and one going to Catawba, and several at Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass, the number of people visiting our neck of the woods on Labor Day weekend will be huge! If you would like to volunteer, contact Mike Snider at 419-734-0515 e-mail buckeyesnider@yahoo.com or Debbie Hymore-Tester at 419-341-0378 e-mail debbie_hymore_tester@frontier.com.

Last week we told you about the PORTS Committee and their activity preparing the way for the arrival of two Tall Ships on Aug. 29 and the following Labor Day Weekend. It has been my honor to work on this committee planning Port Clinton’s activities for that very special weekend. We had another planning meeting on Monday and the committee’s treasurer, Dave Mehl, announced that, through sponsorships and donations, the Committee has now raised nearly $42,000 for the effort. They just completed the Tall Ships weekend in Duluth, MN, and nearly 100,000 people showed up to view the boats. It is all part of the bi-centennial celebration of the naval victory of the American Fleet led by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry in September of 1813, and 16 tall ships will be visiting a number of ports around the western basin of Lake Erie over Labor Day weekend.

Congratulations to Zach Baugh who will be receiving his Eagle Scout Award this Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Port Clinton at 2 p.m. His project was the new gazebo at the pond by the Catawba Township Building. He built it in honor of his late grandfather, Bob Johnston. Doris Johnston, our former receptionist and next-door neighbor, along with Bob, sent me the info on Zach, the son of Bob’s daughter Chris and Brian Baugh. Also, speaking of the Johnston family, Doris and Bob’s oldest son, Jeff, who lives in the Columbus area, recently sold his business, Definitive Homecare Solutions Ltd. to Mediware. Definitive Homecare Solutions is a specialized software company. Jeff was a 1979 graduate of Port Clinton High School. Bob would be a proud grandfather and papa!!!

Our “Find Wylie” winner this week is Joyce Bremyer of Catawba who was one of 97 individuals who confirmed that we forgot to hide our friendly fish in last week’s Beacon.
