Otterbein North Shore has a lot of major events coming up. First up, my friend Ron Howard will be entertaining on the lawn at Otterbein this Friday starting at 4:30. Nobody does “Motown” like Ronnie! This Sunday, August 17, they are hosting a Cake Walk open house, giving folks a chance to tour their decorated model home and take home a cupcake for the effort. On Tuesday, August 19, Otterbein is offering a stroke support group entitled Gathering of Stroke Champions at 2 p.m. It is open to stroke survivors and caregivers and is designed to offer education and support to those individuals. Finally, they will host a special lunch and seminar on Thursday, August 21 at Noon. The seminar is titled “The Top 10 Mistakes Seniors Make when Selling a Home”.
The Port Clinton Harvest Festival will be held in downtown Port Clinton September 26-28. The committee is seeking vendors for their new family fun-zone area where there will be inflatables, pony rides, crafts, games, food and more. The Port Clinton City Schools put their 2014-2015 All-Sport Passes on sale last week. They can be purchased in the main office of the high school between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cost of the passes is $50 for adults and $25 for students. Senior citizens aged 60+ and residents of the School District may obtain a complimentary passport that can be used for all home athletic events online at pccsd.net and clicking on the “Community Link”.
I am very sorry to report that Ava Arnold, the little one-year-old granddaughter of Carmen Richard, a longtime employee of Bassett’s Market, passed away last week after a courageous battle with a very rare genetic neuro-degenerative disorder called Alper’s-Huttenlocher syndrome. Obviously, that battle cost the Arnold family a fortune So, Bassett’s is having a huge fundraising event for Ava on Friday and Saturday, August 29 & 30. Friday’s event starts at 5 p.m. while Saturday’s event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. They will have food, a kids’ tent, raffles, a silent auction as well as a special classic car show.
The women of St. John Lutheran Church, 207 Adams Street in Port Clinton are currently planning their annual Fall Festival to be held on Saturday, September 20. They are seeking table vendors, crafters, artists and local businesses to participate. Each space is just $20. No flea market or garages sale type items will be allowed. Stein Hospice is hosting the PK 5K Run themed “This Run’s for You, Mom” in honor of Patricia King Munn who passed away on September 30 last year. She was a frequent visitor to Lakeside and moved there permanently a few years ago. They owned and operated the Shade Tree and Paper Chase in Lakeside. She was also very active on a number of local committees and helped out at the Danbury Senior Center. The race will be held on Sunday, October 12. The Catawba Island Volunteer Fire Department is holding a special open house this Saturday, August 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to commemorate 65 years of dedicated service to the residents of Catawba. There will be a special Statue Dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Fire Station located on Cemetery Rd. John Gangway is the Catawba Island Township Fire Chief, and as a resident of Catawba for many years, I can tell you that they do a great job keeping us safe.
The 9th Annual Terry Heise Scholarship Golf Classic will be held again this year at Oak Harbor Golf Course on Saturday, September 20. Terry was a local business owner (Port Clinton Glass, still run by his family) who was also very active in the community and served many years as a football and baseball coach.
