Avengers, art and Gem Beach Rocks

Appetite for the Arts was also held over the weekend at the big new hangar behind the Tin Goose Diner and the Liberty Air Museum. While we were there on Saturday morning, one of the “Avenger” World War II U.S. Navy Bombers arrived and was on display. Very impressive! They will have a whole fleet of those U.S. Navy Planes coming to Carl Keller Field and the museum the weekend of September 27 & 28. I watched the end of the movie “Midway” on TV Saturday night. Those Avengers were heavily featured in that American Victory that turned the tide…

One of Port Clinton’s favorite sons, Jamie Wight, now a New Orleans Jazz Musician, recently showed up in town in his 1965 classic red and white Ford Mustang to visit friends and family. If you ever make it to New Orleans, you can see him playing cornet at Preservation Hall or the Palm Court. Former local musician and Middle School Band Director Dave Randels came over from Bryan, Ohio, to join in the family get-together. 

The Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce is coordinating the 5th Semi-Annual Village Wide Garage Sale Days scheduled for this weekend, August 22 & 23. If you would like to place your sale on their list, there is a $3 minimum donation. For more information, call the Chamber office at 419-898-0479. 

The Marblehead Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is holding their monthly Business After Hours this evening (Thursday, August 21) at Dock’s Beach House on W. Lakeshore Drive in Port Clinton. Call the Chamber for reservations or just show up, I am sure they won’t turn you away. 

A couple of events of note coming up at Otterbein North Shore…today (Thursday August 21) at Noon, they will have a complimentary lunch and seminar about the top 10 mistakes seniors make when selling their home. This special “Lunch & Learn” will discuss how to price, stage and market your home to make a big difference in the selling price. Also, next Thursday, August 28, at 9 a.m. they are having Larry Fletcher from Lake Erie Shores and Islands at their Breakfast of Champions. Larry’s topic will be the economic impact of travel and tourism in the Erie and Ottawa County shoreline areas. The women of St. John Lutheran Church, 207 Adams Street in Port Clinton are currently planning their annual Fall Festival to be held on Saturday, September 20. They are seeking table vendors, crafters, artists and local businesses to participate. Each space is just $20. No flea market or garages sale type items will be allowed. A reminder that Trinity United Methodist Church in Port Clinton is continuing to host Lifetree Café, a unique ministry featuring DVDs and discussion groups every Sunday at 6 p.m. The presentation this Sunday, August 24 is titled “Bouncing Back”: turning disasters into opportunities. 

Stein Hospice is hosting the PK 5K Run themed “This Run’s for You, Mom” in honor of Patricia King Munn who passed away on September 30 last year. She was a frequent visitor to Lakeside and moved there permanently a few years ago. They owned and operated the Shade Tree and Paper Chase in Lakeside. She was also very active on a number of local committees and helped out at the Danbury Senior Center. The race will be held on Sunday, October 12. The 9th Annual Terry Heise Scholarship Golf Classic will be held again this year at Oak Harbor Golf Course on Saturday, September 20. Terry was a local business owner (Port Clinton Glass, still run by his family) who was also very active in the community and served many years as a football and baseball coach. Don’t forget our “Coffee with the Editor” session at Common Grounds every Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. Lot’s of interesting local topics are discussed. We have arranged to turn the meeting into a “Town Hall” session once a month featuring Port Clinton Mayor Vince Leone. He is anxious to “correct the record” responding to the rumors on the proposed improvement projects downtown and in Waterworks Park. Also don’t forget that Common Grounds offers their gourmet coffee for just 99-cents with one refill or you can also get 10% off your order on Wednesday mornings.  

The Port Clinton Harvest Festival will be held in downtown Port Clinton September 26-28. The committee is seeking vendors for their new Family Fun-Zone area where there will be inflatables, pony rides, crafts, games, food and more.
