Congratulations to Jim Miller and his crew aboard “Sea Turtle”, who won their class at last Sunday’s Green Island Race. Park and Thomas McRitchie and their crew aboard JEB, who took second in their class and first place for the Green Island Trophy (tops among PCYC boats).
The Ottawa and Erie County Republicans have organized a rally for their candidates scheduled for 6-9 p.m. this Tuesday, September 9 at the Liberty Aviation Museum on State Rd. Matt Borges, the Ohio Republican Party Chairman, will be the guest speaker. Also there will be Roni Reid, Candidate for Ottawa County Auditor and Steve Kraus, candidate for 89th District Ohio House of Representatives. Harbor Side Boat Sales and Bass Haven Marina will be holding their 7th Annual In-Water Boat Show Friday through Sunday, September 12-14 at Bass Haven, 6657 East Harbor Rd. (SR 163). They have free parking. Also represented will be Coastal Marine, Mike’s Dockside Services, Treasure Cove, the U.S. Coast Guard, Nemecek Insurance, Key Bank and Drew’s Custom Golf Carts. Refreshments will be available each day, and Jerry Davenport will provide the entertainment on Saturday, September 13 from 1-4 p.m.
The Port Clinton High School Class of 1954 will be celebrating their 60th Class Reunion the weekend of September 12-14 also. Friday evening they will have a potluck at the America’s Best Motel on E. Perry Street. Saturday night will be dinner at the Catawba Island Club, and Sunday morning they will have breakfast at the PC Elks Lodge. As long as we are looking back at PCHS graduates of years gone by, I received a note from Carol Ewerson that her brother Dale Ewerson, a 1968 graduate and alumni of the University of Idaho, is running for the Idaho Senate. You can see his campaign info at daleforsenate.com. Dale owns a convenience store, sells insurance and is very active in his community.
I received a nice note from Marj Benedict, who noted that she saw the boat name “Be-Calm” entered in our Best of Ottawa County boat name contest. Years back, the late Bill Benedict had a Cal 25 sailboat named “B-Kalm” named for their family, Bill (dad), Kay (daughter), Ann (daughter), Lee (daughter) and Marjorie, (the mom). Bill was Commodore of Port Clinton Yacht Club back in the 1960s.
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be returning to Ottawa County a couple of times this month. Tomorrow (Friday, September 5) they will be at Magruder Hospital from 10:30 to 4:30. Saturday, the Bloodmobile will be at Catawba Township Hall from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Finally, they will be at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church on Marblehead from Noon to 5 p.m. this coming Wednesday, September 10.
Don’t forget our “Coffee with the Editor” session at Common Grounds every Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. Lot’s of interesting local topics are discussed. We have arranged to turn the meeting into a “Town Hall” session once a month featuring Port Clinton Mayor Vince Leone. He is anxious to “correct the record” responding to the rumors on the proposed improvement projects downtown and in Waterworks Park. Two events are coming up at Otterbein North Shore Retirement Village. Friday, they include an iPad Photography Class this Friday, September 5. Beginners meet at 10 a.m. Then, at 11 a.m. they begin to snap a lot of photos, giving the class attendees a chance to use the filters on their iPads to get a custom look. The Lunch and Learn will be held on Wednesday, September 10. It is a complementary lunch then a tour of the Elder College program at BGSU Firelands Campus in Huron. The Port Clinton Harvest Festival will be held in downtown Port Clinton September 26-28. The committee is seeking vendors for their new family fun-zone area where there will be inflatables, pony rides, crafts, games, food and more. The 9th Annual Terry Heise Scholarship Golf Classic will be held again this year at Oak Harbor Golf Course on Saturday, September 20. Terry was a local business owner (Port Clinton Glass, still run by his family) who was also very active in the community and served many years as a football and baseball coach.
