We have completed our vote count on Ottawa County’s Best of the Best Contest. The results are most interesting. In fact, we have the top three in each category listed in The Beacon this week. We will be holding our gala Best of the Best Awards Program at Mon Ami starting at 5:30 on Thursday, September 18. Our “Find Wylie” winner this week is Roxanne Anderson from Erie Township who was one of 266 people to find our friendly fish hiding the ad for The Orchard Restaurant on page 10A in last week’s Beacon. So, Roxanne wins our weekly $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll be hiding Wylie again this week, so if you find him, drop off an entry form at our office in the Beacon Place Business Center or click on the Find Wylie Icon at our website thebeacon.net.

Harbor Side Boat Sales and Bass Haven Marina is holding their 7th Annual IN-Water Boat Show this Friday through Sunday, September 12-14 at Bass Haven, 6657 East Harbor Rd. (SR 163). They have free parking. Also represented will be Coastal Marine, Mike’s Dockside Services, Treasure Cove, the U.S. Coast Guard, Nemecek Insurance, Key Bank and Drew’s Custom Golf Carts. Refreshments will be available each day, and Jerry Davenport will provide the entertainment on Saturday, September 13 from 1-4 p.m. 

The Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Reverse Raffle Beach Party is coming up on Saturday, September 20, at Dock’s Beach House. Tickets are $100 which includes dinner. One additional meal per ticket holder is available for an extra $30. The Grand Prize is $7,500 and SOMEBODY is going to win! Only 300 tickets will be sold. To reserve your ticket, call the Chamber office at 419-734-5503. 

The Oak Harbor American Legion Post #114 will be holding their home football game fish fry events again this year at 221 Park Street from 4-7:30 p.m. featuring Lake Erie Yellow Perch. They will be serving this Friday night (September 12) and again on September 19, October 3 and October 17.

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be returning to Ottawa County a couple more times this month. They will be in Marblehead at the VFW Hall next Wednesday, September 17, from Noon to 5 p.m.; Lakeside at the Wesley Lodge, 510 Central Ave. on September 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and at St. John Lutheran Church, 122 Ottawa Street in Oak Harbor on Monday, September 29 from Noon to 6 p.m. 

St. John Lutheran Church on Adams Street in Port Clinton invites everybody to their Fall Festival on Saturday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be available starting at 11 a.m. with homemade soups, salads, sandwiches and pies. This is not a “flea market”. There will be 34 tables of handcrafted items and quality products for sale. There will also be children’s activities. A photographer for children’s portraits will be there from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds go to Lutheran World Relief, St. John’s General Fund and Ottawa County’s First Call for Help with matching funds from Lutheran Thrivent Financial.

The Ida Rupp Public Library has a full schedule of computer classes in September. They include one-on-one sessions, e-book basics, what else can I do with my iPad?, Tablets, Windows 8.1 and two new classes, using GPS and Applications along with organizing photos, using Flickr and Facebook. Otterbein North Shore is offering a stroke support group entitled Gathering of Stroke Champions at 2 p.m. every third Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be held this Tuesday, September 16. For more information, contact Stacy McMurray at 419-798-8203. 

Don’t forget our “Coffee with the Editor” session at Common Grounds every Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. Lots of interesting local topics are discussed. The Port Clinton Harvest Festival will be held in downtown Port Clinton September 26-28. The committee is seeking vendors for their new Family Fun-zone area where there will be inflatables, pony rides, crafts, games, food and more. The 9th Annual Terry Heise Scholarship Golf Classic will be held again this year at Oak Harbor Golf Course on Saturday, September 20. Terry was a local business owner (Port Clinton Glass, still run by his family) who was also very active in the community and served many years as a football and baseball coach. The Port Clinton High School Class of 1954 will celebrate their 60th Class Reunion this weekend, September 12-14. Friday evening they will have a potluck at the America’s Best Motel on E. Perry Street. Saturday night will be dinner at the Catawba Island Club, and Sunday morning they will have breakfast at the PC Elks Lodge.
